Blog entry Kevin Bacon, you and I: making a difference
A guest blog post: Fourteen year old Adora Svitak began writing at aged three and published her first book at aged seven. She is a Youth Representative for the World Food Programme. She has traveled to Sri Lanka to see for herself the difference school meals make to so many children who don’t have enough to eat at home (pictured below).
Ok, so by now you know about the “6 Degrees of Separation” theory. But do you know the “6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon” game? It connects the actor, Kevin Bacon, to everyone else in the world. But even if we’re not movie stars or go to bed hungry every night instead, we’re all connected.
Sometimes we teenagers make excuses for why we aren’t helping others—“I don’t have enough money to donate,” “I’m too young to do anything.” There’s really no excuse with Freerice. It’s easy (or hard, if you want to go for tough quiz questions), it’s global, and it’s free.
All you need is a brain and an internet connection, then get friends to join you on Freerice. Just think of how many people we can feed by recruiting 6 friends. If they tell their friends, and those friends tell their friends, and…ta-dah! We’ve got a movement. That's the idea behind the "6 Degrees of Freerice", the theme for this year's World Freerice Week.
And the greatest reward of playing Freerice comes from seeing where the rice goes and who it helps. The grains of rice you raise by playing are sent all around the world (just take a look at “Where in the world is your rice?” on YouTube). They say that it’s better to give than to receive, but I think that the adorable smiles of children getting a meal because we played Freerice is the best present anyone could ask for. If you win the 6 Degrees competition, you could get even more—check out the prizes at the website.
Freerice empowers us all to end hunger by making the most of our social connections. You’re only six degrees away.
Thanks for playing, raising rice and reading this blog post!
Will you join my group? It is called Freerice6 Hunger Fighters. Please join so we can fight hunger!
