Entrada de blog Students Win the Ricebowl Challenge
To coincide with the Super Bowl, we held the Ricebowl Challenge in partnership with NFL quarterback, Drew Brees, and the Maine Learning Technology Initiative.
The idea was simple: two teams, one objective - to tackle hunger by raising as much rice as possible between February 6 - 12. Players could choose between two teams, Drew's Ricebowl or the Student's Ricebowl lead by MLTI. In seven days, the two teams raised almost 10 million grains with over two thousand people taking part.
The competition was fierce, however the Student's Ricebowl took the lead and maintained it, ultimately winning the challenge with 5,039,070 grains of rice raised compared to 4,518,020 grains of rice raised by Drew's Ricebowl!
However, the top three players who will each win an Brees-autographed football are all from the Drew's Ricebowl team.
The top three players are also awarded a Brees-autographed football. The winners are:
DK_Dragon who raised 540,780 grains
Beth Coates who raised 315,710 grains
LA_Sherri who raised 265,370 grains
It was the first of many official Freerice tournaments making full use of our new functionality with login and group creation.
Let us know if you are holding tournaments, or if you have any ideas for upcoming tournaments?

Great idea! People, please don't pick on ME tiana... I don't think h/she was bragging by saying that:
''this site gives me somthing to do and it makes me fell good about myself because i get to help people around the world!!
my school Sanford JR High school all played this for a week and i thought it was cool so now me and family are trying to keep maine on top so if you live in maine please keep playing we are now on top and join my NEW GROUP GO MAINE!!!''
I don't see any hint of bragging here, unless you talk about the 'we are now on top' bit. Which is just team spirit. And, if you are not his/her English teacher- *lay off people*! Seriously, this is a website to earn money for the less fortunate- not a website to see who can pick up the most spelling mistakes!
@ Freerice- how can we hold tournaments? Please let me know, I am really interested! I think that we could do homeschooled students vs. public/private schooled students, or high schoolers vs. middle schoolers, (whoops, sorry, most of my ideas are student related...I'm a 13 yr. old homeschooled freshman, so if I think of anything related to me it creeps in...sorry again!) or 17 and under vs. adults, etc., etc...
I love this idea! Besides the already suggested ideas, why don't we try something to support Haiti and Japan?
that is the coolest thing to do to earn rice it is fun and they get a awesome football with a autographed football I would love to have one of those!!
I think that was a great idea feed the poor through a frendly competition.
cool thats alot of rice free rice is such a great site i just got my family into it
I think the Olympic tournament idea sounds great. Being a kid, I don't think we need handicaps. We can beat the adults any day :) I know the holidays are kind of far away, but maybe a holiday tournament would be good, since people are generally more generous around that time any way.
Well, no offense, ME Tiana, but obviously you didn't learn much. ^^appreciate ^^students ^^I'm ^^actually ^^know ^^WRITE I expect these were just typos, but don't (for want of a better word) brag about how much you learned if you can't proofread like 20 words.
If your group isn't beside Groups: then that's why
that's so cool
i really want to join a tournament!!!!!
I like freerice alot! you get to help alot of people! I donated 5,500 grains
please join helping hand
Hmm. If there was another event, I highly doubt that kids would get an advantage. Kids do not need an advantage anyways, some children are pretty smart.
A good event to have would be one for Easter, or Mother's/Father's Day.
Yeah well some kids do learn and at least they are trying and I really don't apprishiate comment because I am one of those studnt's so that kinda hurt i'm actualy trying to help the hunger just like you and every one else and I kow it's over I was just making a comment!!! : (
THINK BEFORE YOU WRIGHT AND SAY IT MIGHT HURT PEOPLE!! :(
do not know what i am doing
huh wat i have no idea how to do this it is over !!! Febuary 12 is over!!
they just keep answering the easy questions and not really learning anything.
<3 I Heart freerice <3
this site gives me somthing to do and it makes me fell good about myself because i get to help people around the world!!

i think i got a good idea:
adults will get half as much as kids with 5 grains. kids get 10. that way, freerice doesnt have to overload rice out (how much does freerice have anyway?)
I have a group called Race to a billion the goal of this group is (obviously) to get to a billion grains of rice. Anyone can join please check it out. :D
have a tournament where kids have handicaps over adults and subjects are sports
We hould have the conyest through out the hole year so every one can have A chance

I like the ideas that bels proposed, an Olympics-style tournament, with different subjects being different sports, 'twould be pretty interesting to try new subjects and everything :)
You should have a contest where randomly the computer puts a green rice in your bowl and if you click it you win something. (for st patricks day)
Love playing and really liked the ricebowl challenge.
Love the idea of a rice-olympics. Would be a great way to support and play at the same time
Second the suggestion about email notifications whenever a new tournament starts!
To the FreeRice team - great job and thank you for all that you do to keep this site working
Can the FreeRice Team send an E-mail everytime there is a tournament? I would love to participate.... LOVE PLAYING!!!!!! AND DONATING RICE AT THE SAME TIME!!!!! Anyway, I still haven't picked what group to be in.... can we join and play in more than one group? I really want to start a group with my friends.. ;) But I see some really cool groups to join in too......
Congrats to everyone who entered. I only recently started my FreeRice account so I didn't get to enter... but I will try next year's.
I will join
Dear all,
Our apologies for the frustration, there is a sitewide problem with playing in groups. The developers have been notified and are working to resolve the matter!
Team Freerice
I have the same problem of not being able to play for a group also.
dog owners or cat owners
pink flamingos or garden gnomes
Have one between the hims and hers?
Is anyone having trouble getting on to their teams as of Feb. 17? Or is it just me?
Wow that is just awesome. Oh and by the way Drew Brees has a group and he makes a lot of rice go to charity. So I am in his group and just feel free to join. Just go to search groups and type in Drew Brees. Hope to see more people there.
That's great that so much rice was raised but there seem to be problems for my group the past few days. One member can't get in-she keeps seeing something about Pressflow. I have no idea what that is. Today, when I went to log in I was able to but it didn't show me as playing in my group. Another member reports the same problem. It looks like there are some bugs to be worked out. While the rice is earned for the program regardless of whether you are in the group or not, the point for us is supposed to be competing with other groups and we want our rice to count toward our group total.
You should have a tournament that ends on Saint Patrick's Day. The winning team is luckier than the other, I guess :P.
(: woohoo!
