No one can say it better than US President Barack Obama: “Children are… (the) greatest treasure, and ensuring their health is one of our most important duties… Our children's continued ability to… reach their full potential will depend on what we do now to secure their future.”

While National School Lunch Week in the US is dedicated to fighting childhood obesity, we’d like to take the opportunity to dedicate lunch hours to raising rice for kids who don’t have access to sufficient nutrition.

The rice you raise on Freerice goes to school meals provided by the World Food Programme. In countries where school attendance is low and child malnutrition rates are high, the promise of at least one nutritious meal each day boosts school enrolment and promotes regular attendance.

So we challenge you during National School Lunch Week – whether you’re in the US or not – to raise 1,000 grains of rice every lunch and help build a better future for our children.

My total is 7,250, and I did 3000 today. I only started like three days ago though, and I'm trying to do at least a thousand a day, so hopefully someday I'll have way more!

This is amazing! I can help hungry students AND have fun. I have only donated 1,000 grains of rice so far, but give me time, I'll have donated enough to fill the continent of Asia!
I'm only 13 and in the 8th grade, but it makes me feel good to know I've done a small part in a big situation.
